Some treasures at Ingenio La Unión are actual legacies that may transform lives and contribute to a better world. One of these wonders is the José Santiago Molina Calderón Botanical Garden, a result of our genuine interest in environmental conservation. It contributes to foster ecological awareness while preserving at-risk species of trees of the South Coast.

The botanical garden is located in finca Los Tarros, in the municipality of Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Escuintla. Along its six hectares, in 2002 CEDILU students planted 40% of the 130 species present in the garden, which include plants such as the esquisuchil, better known locally as Saint Hermano Pedro's tree, sycamore trees and hormigos, from which marimba keys are made.

It was inaugurated on July 21, 2010, and was blessed by the coadjutor bishop of Escuintla, Víctor Hugo Palma Paul.

Over time, several institutions, professionals, employees and CEDILU students have contributed much valued knowledge and time to preserve this ecological treasure.

New flora species were recently introduced to attract local fauna, making this botanical garden a one-of-a-kind ecological sanctuary for the region and its people.
